Vermont-NEA Scholars' Bowl
Kickoff Tournament
ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt. -- Fittingly the championship was not decided until the final round as 12 teams from nine schools opened the 2002-2003 season at the fifth annual Vermont-NEA Scholars' Bowl Kickoff Tournament on Sept. 14, 2002 at Essex High School.
Perennial powers Hanover (N.H.) and Champlain Valley took unbeaten playoff records into their showdown in the last match and Hanover came away with a 185-155 victory and the tournament title. It was the first Kickoff victory for the Marauders who had lost in the finals the previous two years -- including a 2001 loss to Champlain Valley.
In the morning, teams were divided into two groups of six, with each team playing the others in its group. The top three teams in each group advanced to the "A" playoff group to play for the title in the afternoon. In the Prelims, Champlain Valley and Burlington posted perfect 5-0 records to win their groups. Lake Region and Hanover also advanced with 4-1 marks, while Montpelier and Burr & Burton qualified for the "A" playoffs with 2-3 records.
In the playoffs, Hanover was not challenged until its narrow, final-round victory over Champlain Valley which decided the championship. CVU won its other games to finish second -- including a narrow 205-195 decision over third-place Burlington (3-2). Lake Region picked up a pair of playoff wins to finish in fourth.
Colchester B ran the table in the "B" playoffs to finish in seventh place overall. Champlain Valley B was second.

Playoff Round
The top three teams in each preliminary-round group (with points per game deciding the three-way tie for third in Group A) were placed in Group A for the playoffs. Remaining teams competed in Group B.
