Spring Hanover Round Robin
HANOVER, N.H. -- A field of 34 teams from 21 schools in the Granite and Green Mountain States competed at the Spring Hanover Round Robin on March 9, 2002. But in the end it came down to two familiar rivals.
The hosts from Hanover High School school correctly answered the last two questions to break a 13-13 tie and defeat rival Burlington High School in the second of Hanover's twice annual tournaments, which doubled as the New Hampshire Quiz Bowl League's West Region.
Hanover went 9-1 in the preliminary round, losing only to unbeaten Burlington along the way. That mark was good enough to make the Marauders the top team from the New Hampshire West Region and assure them of a spot in the New Hampshire Quiz Bowl League State Tournament. In the playoffs, Hanover, seeded second, dispatched of seventh-seeded Essex (8-2 in the preliminary round), 10-4, then fended off neighboring Lebanon (Lebanon, New Hamp.), 10-7, in the semifinal round. The championship match was close throughout and Marauders' final run proved decisive.
Top-seeded Burlington, which had won the tournament two years in a row and four times in the past five years, got to final by beating the #8 seed, John Stark (8-2 in the prelims), in the quarterfinals 10-3 and #4 St. Johnsbury, 10-2, the semifinals. St. Johnsbury (9-1 in the prelims) and Lebanon (9-1 in the prelims) reached the final four by ousting fifth-seeded Keene, N.H. (7-3 in the prelims) and third-seeded Burr & Burton (9-1 in the prelims), respectively, in the quarterfinals.
Other Vermont schools competing in the tournament were Rice, Colchester, Oxbow, Fair Haven and Lake Region. Preliminary round records for all participating teams are listed below.
