Spring Hanover Round Robin
HANOVER, N.H. -- Hanover High School completed a sweep of its own twice-annual tournaments March 8, 2003 by running the table with a 13-0 record and capturing the Spring Hanover Round Robin.
Hanover was the only squad in the 28-team field (from 18 schools in Vermont and New Hampshire) to post a perfect 10-0 record in the preliminary round. The Marauders then ran off three straight 10-7 victories -- over St. Johnsbury (Vt.) A in the quarterfinals, Burlington (Vt.) A in the semifinals, and Phillips Exeter (Exeter, N.H.) B in the championship game -- to take the title. Hanover, the two-time defending New Hampshire Quiz Bowl League champion, also earned a return bid to states by capturing the intra-regional crown.
The two teams entered from Phillips Exeter both had good days. Each posted a 9-1 record in prelims to take the second and third seeds for the playoffs, then won a quarterfinal game -- over Lebanon (N.H.) A and Winnisquam (Tilton, N.H.), respectively -- to set up a semifinal showdown. Exeter's B's won, 10-5.
Burlington went 8-2 in the round robin to pick up the fourth seed and reached the semis with a 10-7 victory over another 8-2 team, Burr and Burton (Manchester, Vt.), in the quarterfinals. To earn quarterfinal slots, St. Johnsbury beat Fair Haven (Vt.) and Winnisquam beat Lebanon B. All four had 7-3 records in the preliminary round.
Other Vermont schools competing in the tournament were: Mt. Anthony, Spaulding, North Country, and Lake Region. Preliminary round records for all participating teams are listed below.
